Writing Certification Style Questions: A Primer for NP Faculty

Gary Laustsen

Abstract

Computerized certification examinations are developed to determine entry-level competency for nurse practitioner (NP) students. To promote student success in passing the certification examination, NP faculty should seek to develop and incorporate their own certification examination-like items into course testing. This article presents a primer on certification examination item writing to facilitate NP faculty seeking assistance in developing certification examination style test questions. A review of test item writing basics and the five steps for writing test items is discussed and item examples are presented.
