Medicationl Adherence; Educating the ANP student

Patricia Cantillo-Kodzis

Abstract

Medication non-adherence among older adults is an increasing concern for healthcare practitioners. Older adults take multiple medications to treat multiple conditions.  They are also major consumers of over the counter and alternative medications. It is more important than ever for older adults to share their medication regime and practices with their healthcare providers.  Community nurses are in a unique position to assess, educate, and encourage open communication of medication taking behaviors between elders and healthcare providers. Regular medication assessments by registered nurses in the home setting can help to minimize adverse effects associated with non-adherence and poor communication.
