The Divan Center as an Islamic Peace Movement

Raleigh Bailey

Abstract

The Divan Center is a network of Turkish immigrants in North Carolina who join together for social support and common commitment to a type of Islam referred to as Hizmet (service) in their native Turkey. This empirical study, based on interviews and surveys of Divan Center associates, examines their religious beliefs and practices, historical and cultural antecedents, and contemporary issues arguing that we should best understand the Divan Center as an Islamic Peace movement.
